If you do something that is normally categorized as immoral but it has no negative effect on anyone, is it still wrong?

But like think about it, everything we think is immoral we think so because it hurts someone: Stealing takes away from someone else Lying is deceiving someone and leads to someone being hurt usually Assault is physically and sometimes mentally damaging Adultery is disrespectful/insulting/hurts the feeling of one's spouse But, what if I stole something and the person never noticed, or if I lied and no one's feeling got hurt, or if I punched someone in their fake arm and they didn't feel pain, or I cheated on a dude but he never found out? Are those things not bad anymore since they don't have any negative affects, or do they fall under the universal "don't do this no matter what" category?

its still immoral because if u steal, it's /illegal/ and them not finding out doesn't make cheating acceptable it just means u have a better chance of getting away with it

illegal =\= immoral But I'm saying if you /do/ get away with it and no one gets hurt. And those are just examples I thought of. So in general, if you do something normally considered immoral but no one is hurt by it, is it really wrong?

I think it's wrong if there was no guarantee that no one would get hurt when you made the decision in the first place because even if no one got hurt, you still risked someone else's pain for a selfish reason. But, if you knew for sure nothing bad would come from it, it's not.

well yeah. Is it ok to murder someone if no one realises they're dead?

@🎩Llew🎩 But that's hurting the person who died, so it doesn't count.

not if u do it quickly, they don't feel any pain before dying so is that ok?

But they could've had a positive impact on society, now you're taking away the infinite potential of the life of a person as well as their life before their death, so it's still potentially having a negative impact

the same way stealing something might potentially stop a ground breaking scientific discovery or a new masterpiece being painted

the same way that they might have a massive impact on society. Very few people actually do

But they can also have a negative action on countless others. Does the fact that they have a positive impact on one person outweight the negative impact they might have on countless others?

Yes because most people have a greater positive impact than a negative one
