Should parents be allowed to hit their children?

Depends on what kind of hitting. Theres abusive hitting (like across the face and whatnot) and then their is corrective hitting (like spanking or whatnot) spanking should be allowed because sometimes, especially with kids, talking it out or a time out does not always work..my parents spanked me and im grateful for it. :p lol

@jessamyn I completely agree! Hitting as a form of discipline is fine most of the time, but of course abuse is just wrong

some parents r too good they never hit thier kids and then when they grow up the children get out of control

well it's not too difficult to see the difference between discipline and abuse...

well a parent punches a child and justifies it as punishing him

but they have ways of defining abuse, and if the child is hurt pretty bad it doesn't really matter if the parent says it was a punishment because there are limits

i never said it was okay to like punch your kid in the face :p for example, a young child sticks a knife in an electrical socket that could possibly kill them because they don't know any better.? Sure you could try to rationally talk to them, but then again children arent always thinking rationally, are they? ..So then a whipping needs to be put in place as the punishment.. And You guys seem to think that punishment is just a thing a parent does to make their child feel bad. But actually a punishment such as a whipping is the only way a young child might not stick that knife in the socket. Because that child will think in basic terms "if i put a knife in that electrical socket i might get a whipping again, so I'm not gonna do it" they may not see why its dangerous, all they think about putting a knife in the electrical socket will equal a Trust me i have a 7 year old sister and a 5 year old brother who i babysit every single day.. But anyways, this long text was just to explain that i support corrective punishment because sometimes it is the only method that will work, but i am strongly against abuse. :)

@jessamyn I support spanking and other forms of discipline too, and I agree with you. But the question is asking should parents be /allowed/ to hit their children. Since we can't know what really happened in the household, we won't know why the child got hit, so it makes sense for inflicting pain to a certain point to be deemed abuse no matter what the reason for it was considering we never know if the reasons for it are true or not. You got me?

alright so are we gonna start restriction the food in ones household too? Because some parents might fee their child bad food to get rid of them. Are we gonna make it illegal for parents to buy cleaning supplies because a child may consume it and become sick and possibly die? Look its terrible that some parents would hurt their kids like that, but when does one situation make it okay to strip parents from their rights as well parents?

Hitting your kids or beating his/her butt is a form of discipline... But if you're taking it to far as a parent such as hitting the child for no reason, that's abuse... There's a different between discipline and abuse...

Only when the kids act up and be brats. I was spanked a lot but if I had no discipline I'd be a snotty brat. I'm a decent person. But beating up the children is a whole different story. That's abuse. Spanking is good enough

Some kids deserve to be slapped. Secretly doing drugs, losing their virginity deserves a slap. Some of these snotty brats need to feel a little bit if pain to make up for how their parents feel. Of course, this is only in extreme cases, and the slap should be soft, not agonizing.

I feel a swift slap on the ass when the kid is young and doing wrong is perfectly ok. Some kids grow up with no comprehension of right and wrong, and I blame parents for that.

It's not ok if you abuse your child by beating them senseless. I've seen mothers drag their children off buses an slap them on the face for crying.
