How do you do a messy bun?

There are different ways. You should always start with a ponytail. You can wrap it around itself and then secure it. Whatever you want/like. Look up videos.

My problem is that I can't get my hair into a smooth ponytail, let alone a right one that will make the bun secure.

You can do it just like @Sarah said, but you can do it with one rubberband and it is more messy. Follow these instructions to get a really messy ponytail. Hold your ponytail with your hand, then take the remaining hair and wrap it around your hand, insert ponytail-holder. Boom! Messy bun.
