Well depends on how old you guys are. If you guys are young he might just not know how to deal with knowing you like him. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion he doesn't like you yet no matter what anyone else is telling you. I'd try again when the two of you are alone and try to ease into it by talking to him first before you tell him how much you like him. Be persistent.
