Don't try to be artsy, it'll just look cheesy. Sign it normally but neatly, and write a short message.

If it was one of my really close friends, I always would do a Dorito with a smiley face (it was an inside joke) saying "Don't be a Dorito idiot over the summer" (again, part of the inside joke) with my name signed (neatly) at the bottom. Try using some of your really memorable memories of that year, and then write a quick message, or make a joke. It's not that artistic, but fun and memorable.
